What type of breast surgeries are there?
Breast Surgery Procedures
Breast surgery includes a range of procedures designed to enhance, restore, or reshape the breasts depending on a patient’s goals. These procedures can address concerns such as breast size, shape, sagging, or the removal of existing implants.
Breast surgery can be performed for cosmetic enhancement, reconstruction, or revision of previous surgery, and the treatment plan is always tailored to the individual patient.
Types of Breast Surgery
Breast Implant Removal
Breast implant removal involves surgically removing previously placed breast implants. Patients may choose this procedure for a variety of reasons including lifestyle changes, implant aging, personal preference, or to address complications.
During the procedure, the surgeon removes the implants through the original incision where possible. In some cases, the surrounding scar tissue (capsule) may also be removed depending on the patient’s condition.
Some patients may also combine implant removal with a breast lift to restore breast shape after the implants are removed.
Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
A breast lift is designed to raise and reshape sagging breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue.
This procedure can improve:
- Breast position
- Breast shape and firmness
- Nipple position
A breast lift does not significantly change breast size but focuses on creating a more youthful and lifted contour.
Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation increases the size and fullness of the breasts using implants.
The implants are typically placed either:
- Under the breast tissue, or
- Under the chest muscle
This procedure can enhance breast volume, improve symmetry, and create a fuller breast shape.
Breast Lift with Implants
This procedure combines breast augmentation with a breast lift. It is ideal for patients who want to restore volume while also correcting sagging.
The lift reshapes and raises the breast, while the implants provide additional fullness and projection. This combination procedure helps achieve a more balanced and youthful breast contour.
Recovery Time
Recovery varies depending on the specific procedure, but typical timelines include:
First 48 hours
- Mild to moderate swelling and discomfort
- Compression garments or surgical bras may be required
- Rest and limited movement recommended
First 1–2 weeks
- Most patients return to light activities or work
- Swelling and bruising gradually improve
4–6 weeks
- Patients can usually return to normal exercise and activities
3–6 months
- Final results become more visible as swelling fully settles and tissues heal.
